Asli Çakir facing lifetime ban
Turkey’s London Olympic 1500-meter gold medalist Asli Cakir Alptekin has tested positive for a banned substance, the Chinese news agency Xinhua is reporting. New Zealand sources have also reported the positive test.

International sport in mourning: Mennea passed away
Former 200 metres world record holder and Olympic gold medallist Pietro Mennea has died in Rome at the age of 60. ‘Italian sport is in mourning,’ the Italian Olympic Committee said in a statement. Mennea died in a Rome hospital as a result of a long battle with an as yet unnamed incurable disease.

Indoor season closed in Bad Oyenhausen. Otto 5.80m, Filippidis 5.75m
The pole vault meeting held in Bad Oeyhausen, Germany, was the last for the most European pole vaulters for the indoor season. Bjorn Otto won the men’s competition with 5.80m and attempted for a new national record at 6.01m. Filippidis closed the season with one more good vault at 5.75m and got the second place.
